Sue - your other options are: Wood, bamboo, French Ivory.
When you remove the fabric that is on the sticks at the moment, do so very carefully as it will give you a good template. Also, before you remove the fabric spread the fan out and draw a good shape and take careful measurements. It will make life easier when/if you decide to make the lace.
I have a lovely set of sticks which I bought at a flea market but there was no fabric on them, so it is much harder to draw the shape as there is nothing to hold the sticks in place to draw around - also it isn't the usual half circle design it is more of a half oval shape.
