Francis, I've had no trouble knitting on US domestic flights, using circular needles (resin ones from http://www.knitdenise.com/ or wooden ones from http://www.knitpicks.com/needles/Wood_Knitting_Needles__L300306.html). I also knit in February from Miami to Barbados and back.
After September 11, 2001 many airlines did not want knitting needles as they could be used as a weapon with their sharp points. The current TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) regulations allow knitting needles and scissors with pointed tips with blades less than 4 inches, http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm. Specific recommendations for knitting are at http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1252.shtm. Looks like metal needles are not recommended. I don't know what carrier you are using to cross the Atlantic, but these regulations should apply to US carriers. Your local airport security in Brussels may have differing regulations.
