Thank you David, for your version of a tally!
I am still waiting to see someone do them like I do... It would seem
that there are infinite ways to do a tally. I confess that for leaf
tallies, I do them slightly different than I do for square tallys.
Still, I think for relatively new lacemakers who have not yet found a
way to make a pretty tally, having numerous versions available on
YouTube is wonderful!!
I first tried to make a tally when I had been making lace about a year.
At that point, all of the members of the guild I am in referred to them
as "dreaded tallies", so going into it with that mindset was not
helpful. I asked my teacher how to make a tally, and without getting
out of her seat, she said, "You just do it... cross twist twist,
tension, cross twist twist!" Needless to say, that was not helpful at
all, and I realized I needed a "real" lace teacher! Shortly after
that, I had the opportunity to take a class with Ulrike (Lohr, at the
time). I asked her to show me, and she is the one I first learned
from. I came away from that workshop with my head spinning with
excellent ideas and tricks - and have never forgotten what a great
workshop that was!! And the person who invited me to the workshop was
none other than Tess Parrish, who started this thread on tallies by
introducing us to her video! Sometimes things go in circles, don't
they! Thanks again and again, Tess!
I think the key to doing successful tallys is always that you have to
practice, practice, practice. I intentionally took on a piece of lace
which had hundreds of tallies in it, when I wanted to perfect them, and
by the time I had finished the piece, I could safely say that a tally
was just another thing... there were way bigger challenges in that
piece for me than a "mere" tally!! To see the piece, go to

Dear Friends,
Mike has very kindly edited the video of me making a tally in bobbin
lace, and placed it on Utube for your edification. I look forward to
your further comments
