The one thing to remember with square tallies, to get them to look good, is to have the centre passive change sides.- if you use bobbin #2 as the worker, then it must end in the #3 spot, and the #3 passive will then become #2. (I hope this is clear.
It is referred to as the Gate method - like the diagonal cross bar of a gate. Make the centre passive cross in the same direction for every tally, so you lace looks more even. The light catches the tally, and if you do one one way and another in the opposite direction it will show!! The only exception to this rule, that I have found, is when working a "Diamond or plaited" ground - as in Honiton and some Beds laces, when you need to work the 2 tallies in opposite ways, so that the passive pairs can work the centre join first.
