I recently received my copy of the Neue Weihnachts-Klöppelmuster by Brigitte Bellon (2009, Barbara Fay Verlag, Gammelby. ISBN 978-3-925184-40-6) and I would like to share my very, very positive impression of it.
This is a hardcover book, printed on good quality glossy paper. 103 pages long, it contains 42 Christmas-themed patterns. Each pattern is accompanied by at least one exceptionally clear color photograph and one working pattern/working diagram. Many of the patterns have more than one working diagram. The patterns and diagrams are very easy to follow, with enough information for even an advanced beginner to follow but not so much as to clutter it. There is very little text, but what there is (the preface and essential notes for each pattern) appears in German, Spanish, English and French. The languages are color-coded for ease of use. The photographs and diagrams compliment each other perfectly, and there is also room for the lacemaker to be creative. There are lots of stars/snowflakes, hearts, bells, candles, angels, a stocking, a snowman, the Magi (three kings) and even a crib scene. A variety of techniques are used, including Russian braid and Schneeberg. Even someone of fairly limited experience (like me!) can take up the challenge and try something new, thanks to the excellent diagrams. The patterns are beautiful. Lots of them use leaf tallies, and I am planning on using one of them to teach my two students tallies before they know that they are meant to be hard. One particular pattern, a heart in Russian braid (number 14 in the book) has particularly caught my fancy, but I am going to put it off until I work the crib scene (pattern 27). I highly recommend Brigitte Bellon's Neue Weihnachts-Klöppelmuster.
