Hi Mark, There was a small lacemaking tradition in Norway for making gold/silver lace and for making woolen lace. The Jan 1998 issue of Lace has a nice article with photos about the Norwegian tradition by Ernst Ziesler. If you like, I could scan it and email it to you.
I went to Norway around 2003. I visited the Folk Museum in Oslo, where there is on display a pretty fabulous collection of gold and silver lace on folk costumes. I was told by a curator that Ernst Ziesler was the expert on gold and silver lace for Norwegian costumes. I saw an advertisement somewhere soon after my trip for a lace class taught by Ernst and wished I could go to Norway for it. The curator told me that Ernst was writing a book about Norwegian lace but I haven't seen it. A friend who is of Norwegian ancestry like me told me that the gold and silver used for the lace, buttons and brooches came from small family mines in Norway. Mining for it was something the farmers did in the winter. Ernst in his article says that the gold and silver lace was imported and was made locally. I also have a booklet written by Astrid E. Alnes and published by the Tønder Museum in 2004: Med sølv, ull og lin, Norsk knipling fro 1750 til I dag. I can't read it, alas, it doesn't have page numbers but I would guess it has about 30 pages, and there are no addresses either. It does have photos. When I went to the Tønder lace festival in 2004, I introduced myself to the the small group of Norwegian lacemakers who were there but that's as far as it went. They all looked just like my Mom and my Aunts, and they were equally quiet amongst themselves. I don't think they knew any English and, I am sorry to say, I don't know any Norwegian. I'm thinking that there was another more recent article about Norwegian lace in Lace magazine, but I didn't see it. I also have a vague memory of a book about the woolen lace, but I didn't find it either just now. I'll keep looking!
