When I was studying the lace at the Art Institute of Chicago I ran into the same problem Tamara mentions. The museum allowed me to purchase slides of some of their laces (but insisted I only use them for private study, not publication in any form whatsoever). Their staff photographer took the pictures. She even did some "closeups" and was quite pleased with herself. The museum staff is used to photos for insurance purposes, to identify pieces that are stolen. And that is all that the photos are good for. I really couldn't see the structure as clearly as I needed to. You would think that textile department staff would understand what was needed, but they didn't.For one thing they didn't understand how shadows are necessary to see the structures. Lorelei
