Similar customs of woodworking in other countries, showed endearment, but also
were indications of what kind of provider a man would be as per his skills.  
In Norway the man would carve an elaborate lunch box, and when women took
things to the field, the handiwork would be purveyed to survey the best
potential suitor.  

I guess I digressed from lace, but interesting customs with a similar theme.
