Sue and All,
Halas lace is a very young lace. It is a needle lace. At the end of the 19th
century nearly everywhere in Europe was a movement for revival the handmade
craft techniques. And the cottage industry improved everywhere. Árpád Dékani,
born in 1861 and later teacher for drawing, wanted to create am modern
Hungarian needle lace and together with Mária Markovits which worked the new
stitches they founded in Kiskunhalas the Halas lace. The lace itself has over
60 different stiches and is done with a very, very fine thread,
Except one Australian lady some years ago, nobody could take classes to learn
this lace except she want to become a lace worker there. Today there are 8 or
10 ladies working for the manufactory under the direction of Zsuzsa Kiliti.
In the museum, like on the website, you can see all the different old laces. A
short time they worked in color too.
Every year end of april there is a little festival. For that other groups from
other parts of the world are invited to show their laces or crochet handicraft.
Some of you have perhaps seen my annual announcement to it and a few years ago
my report when I took part in the festival.
There exist a wonderful book Halase Csipke with part of the text in English too
and lots of pictures not only from the laces.
