I was told by Mr. McLean, who made these pillows, that the horsehair used is
the same as is used as filling in the seats of Mercedes Benz cars. After
I'd bought the pillows, he actually sent me a sample of the horsehair to
satisfy the curiosity of my daughter, a veterinary surgeon, who was curious
as to whether he was running round a field cutting the tails of horses, or
even whether it was genuine horsehair.

It is washed, sterilised and curled before use.

I'm amazed that you find it heavier than a sawdust-filled pillow, Liz.
Mine are certainly heavier than foam variants, but lighter than any sawdust
filled pillow that I've handled.

The pillow is stuffed with horse hair, and as I didn't make it, I've
no idea whether it's cut up or not. Perhaps a Melbourne lace-maker
could remind me of the name of the bloke who did make it. He lived
down Frankston way - that's all I know. I bought it 2nd hand here in
Ballarat, and yes, it's much heavier than my other cookie pillow
which is sawdust filled.
