A bookmark pattern with fewer repeats makes a lovely Christmas tree ornament, "suncatcher" style window decoration, or brooch. A medium-length bookmark design can be mounted on wide ribbon to make it longer. Also, as Jo pointed out, you can add a new thread when one runs out. Cloth stitch (CTC) workers need a lot of thread but for the rest? 18" with 3-4" left behind for fringe (not tassel) and with a leader thread tied to the other end so you can use every bit should be plenty for a short bookmark. When I make bookmarks, I use 1.5-2 yards per pair (25-36" per bobbin) and have lots left over even after a long tassel. I think my bookmarks mostly take only about 18" per bobbin except for weavers.
