A bookmark pattern with fewer repeats makes a lovely Christmas tree ornament, 
"suncatcher" style window decoration, or brooch.  A medium-length bookmark 
design can be mounted on wide ribbon to make it longer.  

Also, as Jo pointed out, you can add a new thread when one runs out.  

Cloth stitch (CTC) workers need a lot of thread but for the rest?  18" with 
3-4" left behind for fringe (not tassel) and with a leader thread tied to the 
other end so you can use every bit should be plenty for a short bookmark.  When 
I make bookmarks, I use 1.5-2 yards per pair (25-36" per bobbin) and have lots 
left over even after a long tassel.  I think my bookmarks mostly take only 
about 18" per bobbin except for weavers.
