When I came back to Oz m, from Denver after the IOLI convention in 2005, I carried the bobbins I bought in my hand luggage. I declared them, and after a moment's thought the customs guy said "Oh! You meant those little stick things?" I said "Yes" and he waved me away, with a "They are alright". Obviously he had met some Lacemakers before!!!
It is the bark area of wood, apparently that concerns them, not the heart wood. However, anything like that should be carried in the hand luggage, and declared on arrival. Bobbins are OK, but Must be declared if they are wood or bone. Same with food stuffs. I brought back a boiled fruit cake from Helen's wedding, and declared it,.It was waved through OK. I declare the Vegemite when I go to USA, too. I had a 500gm jar of it for Helen on my last trip, and the customs guy said "That dreaful stuff!! It should be banned. You Aussies and your vegemite... " and waved us through!!! :) Much to the amusement of all the other Aussies around us at the time!!! If you do the right thing at customs you are usually OK. I agree that the planes don't give enough room for lace pillows. I tried it on my first trip in the 1990s,and haven't bothered ever again! Hand work is easier to cope with.!
