AHA!  Maybe this is why museum curator-types say that bobbin and needle are the 
only true laces.  Things like cutwork, pulled/drawn thread, hardangar, etc. are 
fabric in which holes have been created.  In other words, the holes are 
ornament, not a fundamental part of the textile creation.  I never understood 
how these people refused to consider them laces, but if they follow this 
definition, it makes some sense.  I still disagree, but at least I can 
understand.

And I still don't see how tatting, lace knitting, and lace weaving are ruled 
out.
