Dear Arachnids,

For those who are stateside and can get to a large bookstore or public
library to read it -- the July-August 2010 issue of "PieceWork" is devoted to
Samplers. Represented are crochet, bobbin lace, knitting, sewing and
embroidery.

_www.pieceworkmagazine.com_ (http://www.pieceworkmagazine.com) for
projects/articles/etc. everyone can view.

The cover, and a 3-page inside article are about crochet samples sewn into
a fabric-page book. Please remember that back before public schools,
women who crocheted could look at a sample and reproduce it -- in quantity --
to sell. An example of a crochet sample pillow top is shown, for
inspiration.

There is a 5-page article about a knitted lace sampler from the Brooklyn
Museum by Susanna E. Lewis, who has written a book "Knitting Lace: A
Workshop with Patterns and Projects" based on this sampler. I have not seen
the
book to review it. Article has 3 of the patterns that you can knit. This
is quite a famous original knitted sampler --- 3 1/2" wide (45-50 stitches)
by 15 feet in length. Should really inspire our lace knitters!

There is a Orenburg sampler to knit, by Galina A. Khmeleva - 5 pages.

A 5-page article about bumps/knobs/bobbles/popcorns/tufts/nupps, by Nancy
Bush. Includes a "bump" pillow to knit.

A 2-page article about a old bobbin-lace sample book.

A 2-page article about sample books from early 20th C.that are in the
collection of the Avenir Museum of Design and Merchandising at Colorado State
University.

A tribute to samplers that was published in 1929 in "Needlecraft" magazine
(published just 8 miles from where I am writing this letter to Arachne).

A 9-page article about England's rural smocking, including 2 pages of
instructions for making a smocking sampler, and 2 pages on a Dorset crosswheel
button to make.

This entire issue could keep a needleworker busy all Summer!
