Before anyone makes the connection that this stitch has something to do with drool, I think the translation is more accurately 'spot' - like a spit-spot, but not the spit itself! That is why the shape is circular. I had help sorting this out via a lacemaker from Slovenia, living in the US, as to the translation of the Slovenian word 'slince' literal meaning 'spits' - but each 'slinca' is a little solid circle in the lace.
Can we start calling it Slovenian spot stitch instead?
