G'day all from New Zealand,
First re Erica, I am pretty sure she moved from the West Coast a few years back and is in the Christchurch area, though I am not sure exactly where. I would imagine she felt the earthquake and has suffered some damage to her house. They say In Christchurch itself every house has some damage, some more than others and some quite minor, but others will not be able to return to their homes. Many of the historic buildings are being condemned, because, of course, they were not built to modern earthquake standards. People are slowly picking up their lives again and getting things sorted. One example of this is my son's firm. Stephen was due to go to Christchurch for a weeks training in his new job, starting on Monday (2 days after the earthquake). He didn't expect to go after the earthquake, but on Sunday was told to go down as expected, so he is down there now and every time they say there has been a strong aftershock I get worried!!! He is due back at his home in Wanganui on Friday and it will be a relief to me to know he is there! Personally, I lived in Christchurch for the first 13 years of my life here in New Zealand, but in 1973 we moved up to the North Island, to Masterton about 60 miles north east of Wellington in what is known as the Wairarapa. We do get earthquakes here too, but are surrounded by hills which often seem to protect us. They say this latest earthquake was felt in the Wairarapa, but I think it must have been felt on our south coast. Certainly it didn't wake me or my furry companion!! Thankfully there has been no loss of life in this event, probably due to it being at 4.35 a.m. when not many people were out and about and one has to admire the people down there who are just getting on with it and pulling together.
