Michael, this book may be a resource for you.

"Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery & Lacework", a reprint of the 1941 edition is available at Lacis in Berekley, Calif.

This book is for lace making by free motion on the sewing machine. The lace is basically all twists with the two threads. I found it really interesting. The main emphasis is on counting the stitches (twists) before crossing other twists thus creating a hand made replica. I bought the book in order to design on my new sewing/ embroidery machine, but never followed up. I think it may be a good starting place for organizing your embroidery programming.

Also a note on the Lacis shop. If you have a chance to be in the San Francisco area, Lacis is east of the city, across the bay. Not just a shop -- really a museum of lace, costume, needlework supplies and tools from the past. The problem is that it's all for sale -- plan a lot of browsing hours.
