Michael, this book may be a resource for you.
"Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery & Lacework", a reprint of the
1941 edition is available at Lacis in Berekley, Calif.
http://www.lacis.com/catalog.
This book is for lace making by free motion on the sewing machine.
The lace is basically all twists with the two threads. I found it
really interesting. The main emphasis is on counting the stitches
(twists) before crossing other twists thus creating a hand made
replica. I bought the book in order to design on my new sewing/
embroidery machine, but never followed up. I think it may be a good
starting place for organizing your embroidery programming.
Also a note on the Lacis shop. If you have a chance to be in the San
Francisco area, Lacis is east of the city, across the bay. Not just a
shop -- really a museum of lace, costume, needlework supplies and
tools from the past. The problem is that it's all for sale -- plan a
lot of browsing hours.
