Thanks, everyone, for the advice about laptop desks, bed tables, etc. Since this is only for a few days, I don't want to ask my husband to buy something, especially as we don't have a car and it's an all-day trip to get to the nearest IKEA by bus and back. I seem to have found a workable solution. I have a serving tray with an egg tray (square cardboard tray that holds 25 eggs) on top. That keeps it nice and stable and does a good job of distributing the heat and weight. I can't write to all of you, so I'm posting this to the list, although it's not lace-related. Thanks, everyone!
