Hi Arachnids

I was not suggesting that the stocking fronts in the picture in Thomas
Wright's book were of Elizabeth's time, on the contrary, the techniques used
in those were probably not used before Victorian times. Regarding his
reference to Huguenots bringing lace to England, I'm afraid Mr Wright probaby
had his facts wrong as there is no evidence to support this particular theory.
The lacemaking that grew up in the areas settled by the fleeing Huguenots is
of a later date than that of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes that is
supposed to have created an influx of lacemakers. However I am not a historian
and I would be happy to hear of any evidence that supports his theory.

Keep lacemaking

Alex
