There's not a single, simple answer to what kind of bobbins I like. I have a wide variety, and use and like all of them. I started with Midlands bobbins because that's what my teacher used. I enjoy looking at and using painted ones as well as just finely turned woods. One of my favorite Midlands is painted to look like a lighthouse. Acually, that painter has three different lighthouses she paints. But I also love to look at and use my Margaret Wall bobbins, Bill Schmitt bobbins, various commemoratives, and so forth. Over many years I have acquired a very large quantity of them, and do have some stories behind some of them.
My continental bobbins are mostly plain wood. My favorite is a medium small Belgium because I can use them in quantity and still fit on my pillow. Less time is spent in looking at the bobbins on a pillow when they are all alike and plain wood, than when the many painted or carved Midlands are used. When demonstrating lace in public, I like to have two pillows... one with basic continentals and one with fancy Midlands. In my early days of making lace, I (and my friends) just had Midlands. In recent years, I have noticed that we are using a lot more continentals. There have been a few demos recently when all of us had continentals on our working pillows, though different styles. In summary, I guess I like variety, but appreciate good material and workmanship. Now, since I have an hour before we go to a Christmas party, I think I'll can finish my current lace project. Do you like plain different types of wood bobbins, or fancily turned bobbins, or do you like crystals in your bobbins, or spliced wood, glass, metal, bone or hand painted bobbins. If hand painted do you prefer holidays, floral, birds, animals scenic. What are your favorite bobbins? Do you have a special story connected to your bobbins personally? Do you prefer moderate bobbins or old antique bobbins? Do you stare at your pillows instead of working on your lace or are your bobbins what you look at when you are trying to figure out the next step in a piece of lace. - To unsubscribe send email to [email protected] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [email protected].
