I haven't been able to see the paper in Science discussing the database and the methodology--bias in the selection of books scanned for example--but Science is one of the 3 or 4 leading and peer-reviewed scientific journals in the world. That doesn't mean that everything they publish is absolutely right, but any paper in Science is worth taking seriously.
Clicking on the date ranges at the bottom of each graph shows the wide variety of lace books included in the database, in addition to the general books on textiles etc. If one is interested in the history of different kinds of lace, I think this tool is worth playing with!
