The system in use in North America measures the weight of (usually) 500 sheets of paper - so obviously exactly the same paper will weigh a different amount if you're weighing 36" x 40" sheets of it than if you're measuring 8-1/2 x 11" sheets. That's why they show 20 lb bond as the same weight as 50 lb book, for example - the book paper is cut in bigger sheets. Hope this helps.
