Last night I took the opportunity of re reading :A Bead Primer: (I notice
that I bought it from Carole Morris)

It would appear that they were produced by "Lamp work" (Suppialume) and all
that I can find on the net indicates that they had some form of air pump and
oil lamps to soften/melt the glass.
There are other simple/ethnic methods illustrated too in the above book.

I can only think that the candle/oil lamp, descriptions, came about as the
result of cursory glance at a bead maker working at a table. I.e. not
realizing that there was a supplementary source that hotted up the flame.

I have discovered a great bead data base, though I did a search and could not
find square cuts in it but Kitty Fisher eyes are there.

Just as an after thought, there is a table in the above book (A Bead Primer)
that allows you to ID a country of origin by the colour of residue left in the
hole of the bead! Fascinating.

Thank you again for the information on modern availability of square cuts.
