When I used to do demos at shows, I had a good collection of identical bobbins, all spangled identically ... I did it out of mischief, really; several times people watching had said to each other "How does she know which one to move next?" "They're all marked with different beads - that must be how." I wanted to find out how they thought I knew which one to move next.
