Hello Jane and everyone I have the booklet "Three Orenburg Shawls to Knit" from Interweave Press. A glance at the directions for the Diamond Triangular Shawl offers this: "With empty needle, RS facing, and working from left to right, pick up each slipped edge st along straight edge of border by placing needle through front of each loop...Work across all these loops by knitting in back of each to give a crossed pattern (and prevent large holes)."
Does this help? I can send you a picture of a corner detail, that, though small does show a portion of the borders with this 'crossed pattern' at the picked up area. I haven't done O/burg knitting, but I think Avital has, hope she can offer further advice.
