Hi Everybody, especially all the Brits on the list: I am still toying with the notion of designing a piece of lace to commemorate the royal wedding. I have a book about Queen Victoria's wedding lace, and I've seen some other lace designs representing Britain, and I am wondering about the use of flower symbols.
England symbolized by a rose - check. Scotland symbolized by a thistle - check. Sometimes (not always) the designer throws in some shamrocks to symbolize Ireland - possibly not PC any more, but I see where it's coming from, so OK. Question: Why do designers never mention the Welsh? I understand Wales is often symbolized by leeks, or sometimes daffodils, but I have never seen a piece of lace, purporting to represent Britain, with either of these. Is it because they use the Prince of Wales' feather motif instead? Or is there some other reason? Is it considered rude? Am I about to drop a very great brick by sticking some daffs into my design?
