Thank you for putting into words the difference. I am not going to be sitting next to the beginner when they go home so it is imperative that they can think about thread paths as soon as possible.
I love the light of 'ah ha!' that crosses a beginners face when they understand a concept, be it cross v twist or the process of Roseground. Lace teaching, especially as Jenny describes it, encourages the learner to recognise design elements, to greet them as friends when next encountered, and to be able to accomplish them because you know how they work, and how they work together.
