Is this The Complete Memo? I have dutifully printed out your memo, also filed it in my Lace Folder for future reference, but I'd like to be complete. Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania ----------------------------------------------------- Reply: No, Lyn, it is not the complete memo for washing lace in a home setting. It is just what would answer the specific question raised by Lesley. It will take a long time to find the original (it is old), but I'll try. I do not believe in keeping secrets about any phase of lacemaking, including lace care. Have been very open and answered a lot of questions through the past 16 years, both privately and to everyone on Arachne. Not just about cleaning lace, but other things learned through spending many vacation weeks going to major museum symposiums about conservation and restoration of textiles. Lace is usually not the subject, so I adapt new things learned to lace. At this point, I believe I do not have all the latest wisdom that is being taught, but I do have many of the best books, including some from Europe that are very good (what I can read in them). The problem is that not all are in English, my only language. And no one book answers all questions about lace care!!! This subject is important only to those who wish to keep their laces in nice condition for future generations. Some people have responded on Arachne that they use their laces, and don't care about the future. I write for the people who do care. Everyone: Our air and water quality is getting worse each day. Many old conservation methods do not take this into consideration. When I recommend distilled water, it is with the knowledge that well water, city-provided water, and rain barrel water have all been affected by pollution, chemicals and minerals.
