While visiting in Germany last year, I had the very good fortune of being able to buy a book entitled, "Lace: Wealth for the Rich, Blessing for the Poor". It is a documentation of a project funded by the Leonardo da Vinci foundation, and involved groups from six European countries. Each group chose a portrait to represent the lace of their country, and then set about reconstructing the lace, as well as the costume itself! There is a bit of history presented for each country, as well as patterns for the lace and the costume. It is a remarkable book, and I treasure it. It was produced in an extremely small edition (only 70 copies, I believe), and is no longer available unless a new printing has been done.

The pictures of the gowns in the Brioude exhibit are (mostly) the costumes made for this project. They were each designed and made by a different group of people. The countries represented are Belgium, Germany, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, and Spain.
