Hi Arachnids I enjoyed your comments on the Lace map curtain on display Clay. I like the idea of no light until you are actually looking at the item, but if the light is insufficient to appreciate it then perhaps the conservators are going too far. I think sometimes they lose the plot and their only aim seems to be to preserve for the sake of preserving. No matter how well preserved the item is likely to disintegrate one day. What is the point? if during that time no one has had the opportunity to study or even enjoy it properly. As a serious student of lace techniques I have been frustrated by not being able to get sufficiently close to lace with sufficient light to be able to work out how the threads relate and work out how it was made.
