I have just returned home from the New England Lace Guild's annual
Retreat in Wareham, MA! I had such a great time, seeing many old
friends and making many new ones! Because of the high cost of gas and
the fact that I was traveling alone, I decided to take the train, and
this was an excellent choice. I didn't have the hassles of air travel
(or the expense!), and the train runs from Lynchburg to Boston with no
changes, so that was a bonus! It took about the same time that driving
or flying (with layovers and early arrival requirements at airports),
but I don't think I could have bought the gas for what my ticket cost.
And I was able to read and knit and relax and not worry about
directions. I recommend it!
The site of the retreat is wonderful. I was able to see nesting
Ospreys, and although I didn't see it, I was told there was a smaller
bird nesting on top of the osprey nest. I figure the ospreys aren't
threatened by the little guys, and so they don't bother them, and
certainly anything that does threaten the little guys will be a threat
to the ospreys as well... so there is built-in security at this shared
accommodation!! Isn't nature grand? There was a turkey vulture
preening and drying his feathers in the sun, and lots and lots of
smaller birds who don't venture as far south as Virginia, so the
location was quite "exotic" to me in that respect.
There were several miles of nature trails, but I only took advantage of
a short walk. The weather was unusually cool (at least for this
"southerner"). But I did walk out to the beach and it is beautiful.
The folks who manage the Sacred Hearts Spirituality Center were awfully
nice, and I enjoyed talking to them.
I took Susie Johnson's Withof class, and this time (my second Withof
workshop), I actually felt like I had made real progress. I actually am
able to so a sewing with a Withof needle-pin - *if* it's in an easy
place!! And I'm getting the hang of scallops, so that's two important
hurtles! Just what I needed... yet another kind of lace to be obsessed
with!!
My kudos to all of the people in the NELG who worked so hard to make the
retreat a great success!
