Hi Brian Regarding hand-carved bobbins - two main branches spring to my mind.
Firstly the plain working bobbins whittled using a pen knife or similar tool as opposed to being turned on a lathe. Secondly bobbins made either by whittling or turning that are decorated using a pen knife or other cutting tool, this further work being for devorative purposes only and having nothing to do with the effectiveness of the bobbin as a tool. Not all decorations were made using a knife or other cutting tool, some indentations were made using a drill or a pointed tool. Hope this helps, I'm sure you will get lots of other suggestions.
