Nancy I use the thumb flicking method of moving bobbins when I am making tallies, but not for other parts of the lace. I have not noticed any effect on the thread unwinding or winding too much. In tallies the flicking happens with alternating thumbs: left thumb flicks to the right, right thumb flicks to the left. I have found this method makes really good tallies, and it is fairly fast.
