There is a very sweet obituary on page 9 in Lace #48 (1987) about this
bobbin maker. It states that he passed away suddenly in August of 1987,
and that he was a quiet person, full of warmth and friendship.
I remember the obituary so distinctly because it is how I identified the
maker of my bobbin.
This bobbin was a gift from a dear friend as we were leaving England
after living there 6 years. I was amazed at the bobbin maker's
craftsmanship, especially his hand carved at the tail of the bobbin to
hold the spangles.
The design itself is a baluster turning with stripes of red and blue.
The friend had misplaced the information about who made it, so it wasn't
until I saw David Naylor's name in the Lace magazine that I realized the
maker of my bobbin with its DN84 inscribed into the flat top of the head
of the bobbin.
I believe it is ivory of some sort because the graining is so definite.
