Dear Nancy,
Then we are as one, because I can easily see that the colored threads
show where things go so much better than plain white. I have a 3 volume
set of a beginner book in French, paperback, where they use colored
threads solely for the purpose of following the path of the threads.
However, I also think that the colors can easily overwhelm an observation
of the structure of the lace. Bottom line: this is a medium. It can
reflect all sorts of expression, which is what makes it art, which
appeals to different people in different ways. When we stop stretching,
we deprive ourselves of the full experience. But you don't have to like
all of it.

Hi Lyn, I agree with almost everything you say, except that I had a
slightly different experience at the start--"I understood the
structure of the Plain White picture better because" I started with
colored threads helping me analyze the thread paths in the plain
white stuff. I confess I am now beginning to think of going back to
color for aesthetic reasons, but I still think a creative analytical
teacher could combine the two uses of color. (And JSB is also my
favorite by a mile.) NancyConnecticut, USA

..The new beginning lace book by Jan Tregidgo does a very fine
job, but I also noticed that I understood the structure of the
Plain White picture better because I wasn't distracted by
colors. What I'm trying to say is that colors and modern have
their place, and a good place it is, too, but the tried and true,
plain white and old stuff, lasted this long because of what it
had to offer. And my favorite 'songwriter' is J.S. Bach.

air conditioning. Tomorrow night will be no air conditioning in
Foggy Bottom. (A/K/A Washington, D.C.) I'm camping. More money
    for books.
