Part of your confusion is that the image of the ground and the image of the
pricking pattern aren't oriented the same way.  The pricking is the right way
up.  But take the lace ground image and rotate it 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
The pins are placed under the 4 diagonal stitches.  No pins support the
vertical pairs -- those are held in place by the twists on the threads.
