Gave up on silver polishing long ago. We now put a sheet of aluminium foil
in a bowl or the sink, add a couple of tablespoons bicarbonate of soda
(baking soda) and the same amount of salt (depends on how much silver you
want to clean) and pour on boiling water. Put the silver items in making
sure they touch the aluminium foil. The tarnish is silver sulphide, and a
chemical reaction takes place which removes the sulphide. Cleans the
crevices too. Remove the items and give them a quick buff with a soft cloth.
Much less effort than polish and probably removes less silver than polish.
