Hello Sr. Claire and everyone If your lace effect is by means of large needles and fine yarn, in plain knitting (no design with intentional holes) your tension should be ok. When we do patterns with lots of YO, k2tog. holes, in fine thread or yarn, it is usual block the finished piece to measurement.
Yes you can dye the item if made of wool, though it is probably better to dye the yarn while in the skein, then any uneven areas aren't noticeable. However, as you've already started, the finished item can be dyed. Where you are in Israel, if Tintex cold water dyes are available somewhere, maybe in the laundry section of a store, that should work for you. Cake decorating pastes or instant drink mixes can be used - though not sure that either would have the colour tone you are after (it makes me shiver a bit, thinking if they can be used to dye wool, what do they do to me if I eat or drink them...). Coffee grounds are good for getting a brown colour. Contact me privately if you want more information on that. Good luck with the chemo.
