Hello All! Thanks to all who responded with info on cold dyes. Intuitively, I guess I knew they were out there--just hadn't crossed paths. Having had "heat setting" drummed into my skull brings up whether these cold dye products are colorfast/lightfast etc. Even heat set products are sometimes not colorfast. And professionals don't seem to have licked the technology either, i.e. while recently using a variegated red DMC floss, I ended up with red marks on the linen. None of my stuff will ever be collected by the V&A <G>, but some of "your" stuff might. So what are the long-term results of using of these cold dye products? And just to clarify my wool-to-felt debacle, I laundered a boucle cardigan, cold/gentle cycle in a lingerie bag. It came out of the wash just fine, then tossed, still in the bag, into the dryer to fluff before line drying. When removed damp a few minutes later it was several sizes smaller & became a lucky find for someone at the thrift store! Hen! ce my concern for Sr. Claire about "garment" dyeing her item & any process that might include time in the dryer. Obviously, all of this is spoken from the amateur ranks! Sr. Claire, I hope when your project is complete, dyed or not, you will share your results. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA where it's 50*, gray, breezy & damp. Yuk
