This discussion reminded me of a man who used to demo lacemaking at the State Fair. He made a set of bobbins from pencils.. round ones, cut to five inches, and with a thread area cut out. He wanted to show that expensive equipment was not necessary.
I also remember the local lacemaker, years ago, who carved her bobbins from driftwood at the beach.
