I was told that it should be an old fashioned 'shoe button', they are rather hard to find no days, but look in your 'families' button supply sometimes there is one there.Fortunately a former lacemaker gave me a small supply.One of the lace teachers in the USA gives each member of her class a fancy button (Louise Colgan, I think).
