Lynn, I tried to reply to you and get approved but it did not go through so resorting to answering on Arachne.
My Lace Guild meets at a library and we pay by the hour for the room. This is a central location for most of our members as they come from a very large area - some driving over an hour to get to the meeting. We used to meet in a church - yes, paying a fee. Try asking local banks if they have a meeting room. If a member of the bank, you might get it for free. Some village halls have meeting rooms for rent. Local restaurants sometimes will allow groups to hold meetings inĀ a separate room as long as you pay or order food.
