Memo 2 of 2 on this subject - not for speed readers

There are lace subjects that have yet to be tackled, and this is why Betty
Ring's achievements are being called to your attention. Learn from her
experiences and build on them when doing lace research!

Money burning a hole in your pocket?

Auction Lots 623 and 624 may be of interest. Lot 624 is described Dresden
Work Sampler, Elizabeth Kirby, Philadelphia, 1730. It looks more like a
needle lace to me. With maker's name and date worked in the lace, it would
be a nice addition to a lace collection. Perhaps the frame has a
Philadelphia notation; it is not on the sampler. With this much information,
I have
been very successful in getting more data to document my own sampler
collection. A good friend does genealogy research for the LDS church
(Mormons),
and I was most surprised where 2 of my 12 samplers came from. (None of
mine cost more than $250, and most were acquired because they were in
compromised condition and needed rescue.)

This leads me to share how the Ring household of 5 boys and 2 girls lived
with walls covered from floors to ceilings with framed samplers -- related
in the printed catalogue and actually pictured in one old issue of "The
Magazine Antiques". Even the children's bedrooms were hung with mourning
sampler embroideries.

"The 7 Ring children grew up nonplussed by a dish towel or rag hung over a
stitched picture, in a house where doors were closed and windows shaded to
protect the precious collection from the deleterious effects of the Texas
sun." One of Ring's sons was quoted "It was what it was; it was all we
knew and to us it was normal."
