As a child where I lived there was a Silk Weaving Factory at the end of our road, in the winter all you could hear was the vibrations of all the machines, but I loved the summer when they had the doors open for ventilation and we would sit on the step and watch the girls (one of whom was my aunt) weaving, it was so noisy that the girls lip read and my aunt now in her 80's still lip reads especially when watching live television, she says you would be surprised at what some of them are saying.
We also had the best dressed dolls as we rummaged in the scrap bins for pieces of silk to make dresses for them. I think that was probably where I got my love of sewing which led me to embroidery and then lace.
