Hi Kim That's a very kind offer to end me samples of wire. It only needs a very short length to measure but would have to be long enough to attach a label to. I have only tried using wire for BL once in a taster workshop, and I didn't make a very good job of it, but I understand what you mean about using the softest wire available.
I don't know how accurate my Dad's micrometer is, it's probably 50 or more years old and I was measuring right at the lowest end of the scale which is marked in thousandths of an inch. When I first left school I worked in a laboratory and we were always told to choose measuring equipment so that the results were not in the top or bottom 10% of the available range. It's not practical to use the micrometer for ordinary threads because the fibres squash down by different amounts - but it would have made life much easier as it's so much quicker to use than making windings. I do at least two, and sometimes several windings for each new thread I get to see.
