I have a couple of pillow stands which were turned in exotic woods by Geoff Mudge in England. Because these are beautifully turned they are not cheap but are like a piece of furniture and don't look out of place in my lounge when in use. These were bought as present for me, at different times, by my DH. Geoff Mudge does not have a website, he has a small catalogue of the items he makes which he sends on request. His e.mail is [email protected]

For working on my lap I made a small rectangular cushion out of an old pillow case I had handy which I cut to size, making it shorter but keeping it's width. I filled the pillow case with the polystyrene pieces that are used as packing in parcels of fragile items, I found I was collecting a lot of these pieces from parcels I received so found a use for them. These poly pieces come in different shapes but you could buy polystyrene beads in craft shops to use as well. It does not need to be filled too full just about half or 2 thirds full, you have to leave plenty of space for the beads to move about inside. I stitched the opening closed and then made a removable cover for it in a pretty fabric. This cushion goes on my lap and when I put the lace pillow on top I shuffle it about on my knees until I get a good angle to work on, the polystyrene shapes or beads move about to form a sloping base.

Before you stitch the pillow case opening closed it is a good idea to pin the opening closed and test with your lace pillow on top to see if there are too many or too Few pieces. Make any necessary adjustments to the filling before you finish off the cushion. I can take this cushion in the back of my pillow carrying bag if necessary, it weighs virtually nothing.

Biggins Bobbins sell a pillow with a bean bag already attached to it, and also a table stand that folds up.

Katelyn asked:-
<<I am wondering what everyone is using as a pillow stand for a cookie
pillow. Do you have a freestanding prop only used for your pillow, or do
you make all your lace with the pillow propped up on the kitchen table?
If you have a prop for use on a table, did you make it or buy it?
At my apartment we were really wanting for space, so my pillow rested on my
lap when in use, and I would roll up a t-shirt under the pillow to give it
a little slant. Now that we are in a house I suddenly have much more space,
and could set up on a small table or get a full stand. What do you
reccomend?>>
