I just posted another picture on the Ning site that shows them  taped to a 
ruler widthwise, with a Honiton bobbin and a Duchesse bobbin also  taped in 
comparison. I think it wasn't clear from the previous picture that the  Val 
bobbins are only half as long as a normal bobbin. The Honiton is about the  
same width at its widest point, but doesn't have the indentation to grab 
hold  of. The Duchesse bobbin is half an inch at the widest part of the bulb, 
so two  of the Val fit where one of the Duchesse fit. 
 
But, I think that the shortness is also important because,  since they are 
half the length of a normal bobbin, you might have some advantage  in the 
storage because you could have them in two concentric circles where only  one 
concentric circle of ordinary size bobbins would fit.
