I use fishing line and never had a spangle break on me or come undone.  I tie a 
square knot close to the large bead, dab a bit of white glue on the knot, 
thread the end through the large bead and pull the knot so that it is centered 
inside the large bead.  Then I carefully snip the ends close and find that they 
slide back into the large bead and are hidden.  It has worked well for me for 
20 years and I still have the same package of fishing line.
