In the note I posted on the 13th at 5:41 am I did say that my remarks applied more to the 18th century than the 19. Conditions in the society as a whole changed drastically from 1700 to 1900. The industrial revolution happened during that period. In its early phases it produced brutal conditions on the workers, although they made more money than at unskilled labor that would have been available before. It also radically changed the relative costs of useful objects, like cloth and clothing. Cloth became cheaper, any machine made object became cheaper, including some that workers may have used. We can't assume that conditions that existed in the last half of the 19th century, or at 1900, were the same as in 1710 or 1750. Lorelei
