When we first did all this scanning and posting, I was told that the pre-1923 date applied internationally, no matter what the US wants. There are ways and ways of finding out whether copyrights have been renewed or not in the US, but we go by the original truly safe date. It gets very complicated if you try to search out the finer points. Thanks for your question, though.
